Around the base there was a mazingly weathered rock and one excersion we did was a walk along a ridge that
had been totally hollowed out so it boomed like a drum when walked (for those concerned about the risk we took
a risk assesment was carried out a copy of which is available from the WISE ISODYN project office). Anycase the
ridge walk was dammed intresting. Though the Italians didn't do outdoor recreational actives they did allow us to
wander and run off base as long as we had a radio with us.
As the survey flying progressed we were required to set up base stations further in the field. The first was set up at
mid point a fueling depot, above you can see myself and Hugh waiting for Borek to take us there (we are not normally
this fat but we have a large amount of clothing on as it was-35°C
plus a wind chill of 25 knots). Not a very flattering
photo (so no one go using it!! but I guess I have lost control of it!!)but having just come in from the wind and -35°C it
kind of makes you respect the elements (we used to quite often see Egi our Italian colabroator looking 'broken' having
returned from servicing is base stations on the plataue).
